How to Change The Energy Of Your Home
Do you ever spend time with your house or office? With the items in your home or office? Time with yourself? Without busy distractions, in quiet contemplation?
When was the last time you put away a cookbook and looked at it? Held it? Thought about the recipes contained within it?
When did you last light a candle or incense and hold it lovingly in your hands, feeling a smile rise on the inside as the smoke also starts to rise?
What about ordinary things, like the clothing you are wearing?
Where Your Attention Goes, Your Energy Flows
Our things need our time and attention as much as we nurture children, our pets, and our plants. Children, pets, and plants thrive when they have loving attention. Where our attention goes, our energy flows. Consider pausing and contemplating on the things in our life and whether they are getting any attention from us.
Have you ever noticed when holding a treasured necklace or a paperweight from your grandmother and seeing it and loving it that it tends to sparkle a bit brighter? These items seem to awaken from their slumber to face the day and dance – because someone is watching- the tree does need the forest to be heard.
The prettier and more connected an item is to a person or a memory, the higher the likelihood it will be held and adored, even cherished. It follows that the uglier, more straightforward, more practical use an item may be, the less likely it will be acknowledged in the same way. Those items may get used; they might even get abused then tossed away, quickly replaced with a dollar tree substitute.
How we use our items reflects our priorities, our values as much as anything else. Your stuff is a great big mirror.
Take a moment right now to pause and look around at your surroundings with new eyes.
Look around your living room, your kitchen, your front yard – look at it like you have never seen it before, like you are walking into a stranger’s home and just meeting them and their environment for the first time.

Looking at your space from an outsider’s perspective, what first impressions do you have? What are your thoughts and perceptions of this person? How does this home hit you in your body? What do you feel like physically when you are in it? Does your heart tighten and constrict, or does it flutter with the energy? Panic? Peace? Do your neck and shoulders hunch up closer or relax? Do you want to sit in this space and have tea with your friend, or do you want to cut the visit short? What is happening? Jot it down if you’re going to. These perceptions will guide you in what needs to be done.
Pick up an item close by to you and look at it – what is its story? Where did it come from? How does it make you feel? Why did you choose that place to put it? If you can’t even remember buying it and are surprised to see it, you probably could part with it.
This article is not about what to keep and what to part with – although if you do this activity with each item, it will give you the ability to make these decisions. This article is about the ability to change the energy in your home using how you feel about your area and your things as your guide.
Creating a Space With Intention
Creating a space with intention is to revitalize your soul and reconnect you to the moment. Be mindful and present, and engage in your environment differently. It can anchor you into this moment, into the ‘Now.’ This is where you need to be to make changes in your life.
What impressions did you receive when you looked at your environment with new eyes? What thoughts and emotions come up for you?
The state of the objects in our home or office can explain why specific problems arise in our lives. When you pick up an item containing a bad memory or experience, this “item” in your home is a subconscious-energetic reminder of the experience.
Connect with each item in your home or office and keep the items that you love and that add to your positive emotions. Your stuff can inspire or deplete you. Your things can give you an opportunity to show and feel appreciation and thanksgiving – reminding you of the values that you hold dear. The objects and items in your life can be a treasure map to your inner workings – or a blueprint for what you might want to create in your life.
By creating your space with intention, you can change your life by changing the physical items in your environment. You can use items to represent the things you want to change. For example, if you need to bring in more money – what items can you put into your environment that means “more money” or the ability to make more money from your perspective? Collect those items into one place and dust them, hold them, envision your life with more money, and display them in such a way that makes you feel alive and energized. Spend 30 seconds every day looking at this area and remembering your intention.
Move 27 Items
If you’re stuck and want change to occur, Feng Shui recommends moving around 27 items. But don’t do this mindlessly – be in the moment with your items. All 27 items should be picked up, held, dusted, “talked” to, and connected with before deciding where the best place to reside should be.
Choose your environment by consciously being mindful of the things you have and how they play a role in the energetic “feel” in your spaces.
I hope you think about the possibilities your house or office and possessions hold for you and play with the ideas presented in the article.
